Mitigate Harmonics. Protect Your Systems.

Phase shifting transformers from Magnetics Design are expertly engineered to cancel out disruptive harmonic currents generated by non-linear loads like Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). Secure clean, reliable power and extend the life of your equipment.

/The Magnetics Design Advantage/

Clean power for high-demand drives.

Non-linear loads distort current, causing excessive heating, inefficiencies, and equipment degradation. Our multi-pulse phase shifting transformers cancel out these specific harmonic signatures.

01

Harmonic Cancellation

Targeted phase shifts (e.g., 12, 18, or 24-pulse) effectively trap and cancel triplen and high-order harmonics.

02

IEEE 519 Compliance

Engineered to help industrial facilities meet strict IEEE 519 standards for voltage and current distortion limits.

03

Drive Isolation

Provides galvanic isolation to protect delicate VFD electronics from harsh line disturbances and transients.

04

Thermal Reliability

Designed to handle the extra heat generated by harmonic currents without derating or accelerated aging.

/FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS/

Questions Engineers Ask

What does a phase shift transformer do for my VFD system?

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) convert AC to DC and back to AC, drawing current in non-linear pulses. This creates harmonic distortion on the power line. A phase shifting transformer splits the power into multiple secondary windings, each slightly out of phase with the others (e.g., 12-pulse, 18-pulse). When the harmonic currents from these windings meet at the primary, they mathematically cancel each other out, keeping your line power clean.

The “pulse” number refers to the number of rectifier diodes the transformer is designed to feed. Higher pulse numbers provide greater degrees of phase shifting, which cancels higher orders of harmonics. A 12-pulse system significantly reduces 5th and 7th harmonics. An 18-pulse system additionally cancels 11th and 13th harmonics, offering cleaner power that typically ensures full compliance with IEEE 519 standards.

Lead times vary depending on whether the unit can be supplied from our stock or if it requires custom engineering and manufacturing.
