/Grounding Transformers/

A neutral point for every ungrounded system.

A grounding transformer is a special-purpose transformer used to provide a ground path for an ungrounded or delta-connected system. By creating a neutral point, it allows protective devices to operate correctly during line-to-ground faults — improving system stability and safety.

/Function & Purpose/

What a grounding transformer does.

On systems with no inherent ground reference, a grounding transformer creates one — giving protection systems a reliable path to detect and clear faults.

/FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS/

Questions engineers ask

When do I need a grounding transformer?

Any ungrounded or delta-connected system that needs a neutral reference for protective relaying, voltage stability, or code compliance is a candidate. Common applications include generator interconnections, industrial delta systems, and isolated distribution feeders.

A standard transformer steps voltage up or down to serve load. A grounding transformer’s primary job is to create a neutral point and carry ground fault current briefly during a fault — it’s typically not sized to carry continuous load the way a distribution transformer is.

Sizing is driven by system voltage and the available or required ground fault current, along with the duration the unit needs to carry that current before protective devices clear the fault. Your rep will size the unit from your system’s fault study or single-line diagram.

Yes. Neutral resistors or reactors, current transformers for relaying, and enclosure options can all be added — tell your rep about the protection scheme and we’ll spec it accordingly.

Domestic build and sourcing options are available for projects that require Buy America or similar compliance. Let your rep know up front so the quote reflects the right manufacturing path.
